Cultural and Business Challenges in China for an Established Major Foreign Buyer
- Important Lessons Learned when Buying 15,000 containers of Appliances & Electronics per Year from Chinese Factories, Year after Year -
Presented by Mr. Henrik Qvist. Managing Director, Clatronic Far East Limited

With more than 20 years of experience in Asia, Henrik Qvist is currently Managing Director of Clatronic Far East Ltd., a major Germany-based European importer of small appliances and consumer electronics.  Success in this field requires – among other things – a deep understanding of Asian cultures.  How do you cope with all the changes?  How do you survive the constant difficulties in dealing with several manufacturers simultaneously while meeting critical deadlines and quality standards?

If you, as an entrepreneur develop and manufacture tangible “products”, you will eventually have to deal with one or more manufacturers.  In all likelihood these manufacturers will be located in China.  In his speech, Henrik will cover many of the potential problems you may encounter and explain how best to handle them.

We highly encourage all TEN members and guests who have – or will one day have – products to manufacture to attend this important event.

After the presentation, the session will continue in an interactive Q & A format where members and guests are encouraged to discuss relevant issues with our guest speaker.

About our speaker:

Henrik Qvist
Managing Director, Clatronic Far East Limited

At the age of 20 Henrik Qvist went to New York and Miami as buyer for a Danish mail-order company selling to diplomats worldwide, sourcing full container loads of products by GE, White-Westinghouse and the like.

At age 22 Henrik became the youngest buyer at Metro – one the largest retailers in Europe and four years later they sent him off to Hong Kong.

He then spent the next 15 years with several buying offices of major European retailers sourcing everything in SEA from Jewellery in Thailand, cutlery in Japan, teddy-bears in Sri-Lanka, leather-bags in South Korea, glass in Indonesia, household-plastics in Taiwan, bamboo-trays in Vietnam and everything from China.

KL was the next challenge as Henrik became Commercial-Director for Makro in Malaysia. He sold more DVD’s with 8 C&C-markets than Carrefour and Tesco due to his direct China imports. After a year he supported the sale of the company to Tesco at +30% of expectation.

Makro then sent Henrik to Jakarta where he increased the monthly imported container quantity from two to 40 – all from China and all selling without any claims.  Again the company was successfully sold, this time to Lotte (South-Korea) after a year of turn-around.

Next Henrik went to Makro Pakistan to support the first modern retailer in the country and he made the first TV-Radio-Banner-Newspaper-Promo coordination with “Buy a TV get a DVD” resulting in major traffic-jams.  Henrik was the only Dane staying on in the country after the Danish Embassy was blown up.

Back “home” in Hong Kong for the past three years, Henrik is now working as Managing Director at Clatronic, sourcing 15,000 containers yearly of small home appliances and consumer electronic goods from China.
