TEN’s February 21 event is a special joint presentation for TEN and StartupsHK members and guests, focusing on common business startup issues.

1. 18 Do’s and Don’ts When Starting and Growing a Business - Smart & Proven Entrepreneurial Strategies
Presented by Mr. Steven C. Book, Hon. Chairman of TEN and serial entrepreneur

Starting a business “on the right foundation” and then growing it with a smart strategy is crucial to success.  Too many entrepreneurs unfortunately get obsessed with an idea or product in the early stages while failing to fully recognize the numerous challenges that will face them when trying to build the business.  What usually matters most are cost-effective marketing & sales and how to profitably operate and expand the business without falling into common “traps”.  Sadly, about 80% of new startups fail within 3 years.  Many of the reasons for this disappointing statistic will be addressed head-on in Steven’s presentation.

2. I’ve Got a Great Idea, BUT…
Presented by Mr. Jon Buford, Co-Founder of StartupsHK and serial entrepreneur

Immediately following Mr. Book’s speech will be a talk by Mr. Jon Buford:  “I’ve Got a Great Idea, BUT…”   You want to start or grow your business, but you don't know where to start. What are the most common problems and solutions that come up with startup companies? Come and learn from the experience of founding and growing a startup community and having talked with hundreds of early stage startup founders.

After the two presentations, the session will continue in an interactive Q & A format where members and guests are encouraged to discuss relevant issues with our two guest speakers.

About our speakers:

Steven C. Book,
Hon. Chairman of TEN and serial entrepreneur

Steven is Honorary Chairman of The Entrepreneurs’ Network (TEN), the largest non-profit organization in Hong Kong by and for entrepreneurs.

A serial entrepreneur, Steven has launched numerous companies and joint ventures over 35+ years.  A product developer, inventor, creative marketer, and manufacturer (co-founder of two factories in China) he has leveraged many companies quickly to significant size, using powerful business models. He started his first China manufacturing venture in the 1980’s.  By 1997 he was co-owner of one factory employing more than 300 people. A few years later he also co-owned a second factory.

With dual Master’s degrees, Steven started his career in international marketing consulting, with “Fortune 500” clients in the automobile, auto aftermarket, electronics, cosmetics, beverage, and food industries, among others. He was heavily involved in the successful global launch of Coffee-Mate® non-dairy creamer (a Nestlé product).  But after less than 5 years in the “corporate world”, with strong desire to achieve personal and financial independence, he became an entrepreneur by exploiting his interests in product development and creative marketing.  His experience covers plastics, computer accessories, textiles, car accessories, promotional products, electronics, medical, specialty chemical products, publishing, and many others.

Recently, Steven has set aside more time to assist aspiring entrepreneurs.  Actively involved with many entrepreneurial organizations in Hong Kong for more than 10 years, he is a frequent guest speaker on entrepreneurship at HKU, HKUST, Chambers of Commerce and other clubs and organizations.

Steven is currently CEO of Bok See Wei Resources and Chairman of Delbrouck Industries Ltd., an OEM/ODM plastics development and manufacturing company.

Jon Buford,
Co-Founder of StartupsHK and serial entrepreneur

Jon is an engineer at heart, having studied Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University before getting into robotics and bio medical research. After that it gets a bit complicated.

He spent 5 years in the toy industry, working on a wide range of products including the original Bratz dolls, voice activated robots, and a real time bluescreen camera. Seeing the writing on the wall for that market, in 2005, he created the first crowd funded adult toy, the Happy Kitty, which was his first entrance into managing online communities for products.

After a short time growing an invention licensing and product development consulting company, it became a casualty in the 2008 retail massacre. He switched to online startups, building a project management platform for product development. In the midst of this (2009), he met up with his co-founders for StartupsHK and started meeting with them on a weekly basis in the Startup Monday meetups.

Since then, StartupsHK has grown into the largest startup entrepreneur community in Hong Kong, and is actively building out as a media and event hub for tech startups. Jon also founded BootHK, the first dedicated co-work space in late 2010, which was recently re-launched as part of the HK Commons co-work space in Sheung Wan and Lai Chi Kok. In his role as a community founder, he helps to host events, such as Startup Weekend, Startup Saturday, and gives talks on entrepreneurship and tech startups.

Jon is currently working on Makible, an open innovation company focused on developing low cost and accessible technology. Their first products, MakiBox, is a line of digital manufacturing products, starting with the world's most affordable 3D printer, the $200 MakiBox A6.
