Brewing Success in the Shadows of Starbucks & Pacific Coffee
Presented by Mr. Y.B. Rai, Owner & Managing Director, Uncle Russ Coffee

Y.B. Rai entered the stand-alone gourmet coffee shop business, and became an entrepreneur, as the result of special circumstances.  After being a long-time employee he took an opportunity to buy the company from his boss.

Uncle Russ Coffee had operated several shops in Hong Kong since 1992.  However, by the time Y.B. took over the business the company was down to just one shop in Discovery Bay; the one YB had been managing.  Today Uncle Russ Coffee operates four very successful shops in Hong Kong, has expanded into coffee roasting, wholesale business for coffee beans and coffee equipment, and has also recently opened a unique wine bar.

Although Y.B. explains his success simply - “Uncle Russ serves the best coffee in Hong Kong” - there are of course other factors as well.  Y.B. will talk about these factors, his numerous challenges over the past 12 years, and also share his general business philosophy.  Y.B. is no stranger to taking on difficult challenges.  When others said golf might not be a suitable sport for 5’2” Y.B., he proved them totally wrong.  An excellent amateur golfer with a “killer” swing, Y.B. has won several amateur golf tournaments in recent years in Hong Kong, and was runner-up at the Macau Open Amateur Championship.

After the presentation, the session will continue in an interactive Q & A format where members and guests are encouraged to discuss relevant issues with our guest speaker.

About our speaker:

Y.B. Rai,
Owner & Managing Director, Uncle Russ Coffee

Y.B. Rai, a native of Nepal, immigrated to Hong Kong in 1994.  Prior to this he spent several years in Korea where he was inspired by hard working Koreans to plan his own future business.  After arriving in Hong Kong his initial dream was to open a Korean restaurant.  However, after realizing the high overhead costs in Hong Kong, and the difficulty in managing restaurant staff, he changed his plan.  He decided to focus on the gourmet coffee shop trend which was then in its early stages in Asia.  Starbucks had not yet been launched in Hong Kong but other smaller companies, started by ex-pats, were already trying to get a foot-hold.

Y.B. joined Uncle Russ Coffee in 1995 as the first Asian staff in the company. To Y.B. it was an opportunity to learn the coffee business.  He worked his way up from barista to shop manager, and then in 1997 to operations manager handling several stores.  In 2000, when the economy was still weak and Uncle Russ Coffee was facing problems,  Y.B. bought the Hong Kong business from the original founder and owner.

Y.B. is former vice chairman of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.  Y.B. has been a supporter and member of TEN for several years.

Y.B. is a long-time Discovery Bay resident.  He supports various sports, community and charity events such as tennis, dragon boating and golf.  Y.B. is a patron in Hong Kong Nepalese Tennis Society and chairman of Discovery Bay Residents’ Golf Society.  As a golf player Y.B. has won several amateur golf tournaments, including the bulthaup June 2011 Stableford Tournament in Discovery Bay.
