TiE Hong Kong and TEN – The Entrepreneurs’ Network are proud to announce this joint special event.  The event will be hosted by KPMG Hong Kong, a global network of professional firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services (

TiE Hong Kong, set up in 2012, is the local chapter of TiE Global. TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) was founded in 1992 in Silicone Valley by a group of successful entrepreneurs, executives, and professionals with roots in the Indus region.

TEN – The Entrepreneurs’ Network, founded in Hong Kong in 2005, is Hong Kong’s largest non-profit organization by and for entrepreneurs dedicated to entrepreneurship and currently has over 200 members and a mailing list of 1,500.

In his keynote speech, serial entrepreneur and dynamic speaker Ashok Rao will offer his insights and experiences to help entrepreneurs cope with challenges and build successful companies.  Among the numerous valuable-to-know points he will share with the audience are:

  • What it really takes to be your own boss
  • Can anyone be a successful entrepreneur?
  • Innovation as the catalyst for entrepreneurship
  • The role of local entrepreneur organizations (like TiE and TEN) in supporting startups
  • Investors' paradox: a look at VC and Angel investing
  • Hard lessons learned while building companies

Prior to the keynote speech, brief presentations will also be made by Mr. Steven C. Book, serial entrepreneur and Hon. Chairman of TEN, and Mr. Iain Reed, President TiE Hong Kong and Chairman & Co-Founder, EFA.

Immediately following Mr. Rao’s speech the session will continue in an interactive Q & A format where members and guests are encouraged to discuss relevant issues with our guest speaker.

Spots will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. All online registrants will receive an email confirmation. Non-registrants will not be admitted to this event. About our keynote speaker:

Mr. Ashok Rao
Chairman, TiE Global

Mr. Ashok Rao is a serial entrepreneur and investor of several successful high technology start-ups. He founded ASCENT, the largest trade association for the long distance & wireless industry with over 1,000 member companies, and served as Chairman for its first 2 years.

Mr. Rao was the first Indian-American to take a company public on NASDAQ. He founded Midcom Communications in 1990. As CEO and founder, he grew the company into one of the 10 largest long distance carriers with $250 million in annual revenues, culminating in a successful IPO in July 1995. He founded Trex Communications Corporation in December 1997, a Satellite Communications business. TrexCom’s revenues reached $60 million in 2 years. From 2000 to 2003, Mr. Rao was CEO of Prime Wave Communications, a broadband wireless access technology start-up with revenues of $50 million.

Mr. Rao is Chairman of the TiE Global Board of Trustees. TiE ( ) is the world’s largest organization of entrepreneurs with over 11,000 members, including over 2,500 charter members in 60 chapters across 18 countries. He has been a guest lecturer at Rice University and a Trustee at Franklin Pierce University.

He is currently the CEO of Excalibur Pictures, and has so far produced four award winning feature films.

Steven is Honorary Chairman of TEN - The Entrepreneurs’ Network.  He has founded/co-founded nine companies over 35+ years.  A product developer, inventor, creative marketer, he has leveraged many companies quickly to significant size, using powerful business models.  He started his first China manufacturing venture in the 1980’s and is the co-founder of two factories in China.  His companies currently employ about 300 in seven countries, incl. Hong Kong and China.

Steven started in international marketing consulting, with “Fortune 500” and Japanese clients in consumer products industries.  He became an entrepreneur by exploiting his interests in product development and creative marketing.  His experience includes plastics, computer accessories, car accessories, promotional products, electronics, medical, and specialty chemical products.

Actively involved with entrepreneurial organizations in Hong Kong for 11 years, he is a frequent guest speaker on entrepreneurship at HKU, HKUST, Chambers of Commerce and other organizations.  Steven is currently CEO of Bok See Wei Resources and Chairman of Delbrouck Industries Ltd., an OEM/ODM plastics development and manufacturing company.


Mr. Iain Reed

Originally from the UK, Iain Reed has lived in Asia-Pacific for 23 years in Thailand, Indonesia, India, Singapore and, now, Hong Kong.

Having graduated from Cambridge University in 1989 he immediately set-up his first company trading consumer goods between Indonesia and the UK for 4 years. He then spent 10 years and an investment analyst for Barclays De Zoete Wedd, Societe Generale and then CLSA before leaving to set-up a financial technology company, Enhanced Data Group, in 2003. EDG employs 30 people in 6 locations globally. In his role as Chairman, he oversees the consulting services division and business development for the group and is launching a platform for hedge funds called EFAdrin.

Iain is an active committee member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong sitting on both the Financial Services and IT committees and is the Vice-Chairman of the Angel Committee.

He is the founding President of TiE Hong Kong, the local chapter of TiE which is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship through mentoring, education and networking globally.
