Business Privacy, Integrity and Safety - 5 Things You Can and Should Do to Protect Your Business in the Post-Snowden Era
Mr. Vanson Soo, Founder & Director, Vanuscript Consulting Co. Ltd.

Historians will mark June 2013 a significant date in the evolution of mankind. The year 2014 will be officially 1 P.S - 1 year Post Snowden – but are your data and communications still intact in “one piece” then? Chances are you wouldn't even know, until it's too late.  Wifi intrusion into laptops in hotel rooms and at airports, offices and homes, compromised cell phones and land lines, eavesdropped business meetings, etc. How does a businessperson guard against these risks?  What active measures can or should the average entrepreneur undertake to deal with all these possible threats?

Vanson Soo will share real life examples to amplify why these risks matter to entrepreneurs and explain 5 things you can do right now to protect yourself even without any special IT expertise.  It may sound like science fiction but that's the harsh reality business people face these days. Prior to last June, the pre-Snowden era, many were oblivious to (cyber) espionage and cyber security risks. Early warnings were either cast off as paranoia or ignored with the "what has that to do with me" attitude.

Vanson will also cover several common business scams that entrepreneurs need to be aware of, including cases involving the seemingly legitimate multi-million dollar sales order.

After our speaker's presentation, the session will continue in an interactive Q & A format where members and guests are encouraged to discuss relevant issues with our guest speaker.

About our speaker:

Vanson Soo
Director, Vanuscript Consulting Co. Ltd.

Vanson Soo runs a consulting firm that specializes in business intelligence and commercial investigations. As a sleuth, he has rolled up his sleeves and investigated on the front line hundreds of cases of varied nature including counter-espionage, fugitive hunts, asset tracing, commercial frauds, background checks, due diligence inquiries, etc. He is also actively pursuing his passion for writing with a regular column (“Discreetly” in The Standard and www.asiasentinel.com) and “Shhh-cretly” blog (http://vansonsoo.com/) on topics like cyber security, spies craft, espionage, etc. He was previously an award-winning commercial crimes investigative reporter and a regional economist for a major Swiss financial institution.

While not formally IT-trained, digging and keeping secrets is part and parcel of Vanson’s profession.  This led to his interest and research in various defensive low-cost "tricks" and solutions. He has written and lectured about cyber espionage and cyber security risks long before former NSA contractor Edward Snowden hit the headlines, which led to a Bloomberg TV interview on the art of going undercover and staying undetectable.

EDUCATION
Vanson studied economics for his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Canada at Queen’s University and McGill University, respectively. He also obtained a Master of Journalism with Distinction from the University of Hong Kong.
